'Tis the Season

Each year around this time, we make the decision to purchase a living Christmas tree or pull the old artificial tree out of the attic. According to the National Christmas Tree Association, here are some eco-friendly reasons to spring for a living Christmas tree this holiday season:

Real trees are a renewable, recyclable resource. Artificial trees contain non-biodegradable plastics and possible metal toxins such as lead.

For each Christmas tree harvested, one to three seedlings are planted the following spring.

Christmas tree farms help protect green space. There are approximately 350,000 acres in production for growing Christmas trees in the US.

There are currently over 350 million Christmas trees growing on close to 15,000 US farms.

North American Real Christmas Trees are grown in all 50 states (with NC being a top producing state) and Canada while 80% of artificial trees worldwide are made in China (according to the US Department of Commerce).

There are more than 4,000 Christmas tree recycling programs throughout the US. Last year, New Hanover County set up four drop off locations.

So just where will you go this year for your real Christmas tree? Kitchens Tree Farm from Boone, NC is selling Fraser Firs (the most popular Christmas tree variety) for the first time in Wilmington. Here are the details:

Where: Main Dungannon Boulevard entrance of Autumn Hall off Eastwood Road just past the intersection of Cardinal Road. Look for a sign and Christmas trees, of course!

When: December 1- Christmas. Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm.

Tree Sizes Available: 7-10 feet (12 feet available by order only)
